About the role

Senior Materials Engineer

Location: Chicago, IL

Dimension Inx designs, develops, and manufactures therapeutic products that restore tissue and organ function. We are an energetic team of materials and biomedical engineers, scientists, designers, manufacturing experts, and market and business leaders. Our company is well-financed, venture-backed, and currently ramping up for a period of rapid growth.

The Senior Materials Engineer will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer. This role will contribute to collaborative early-stage projects, internal innovation focused R&D, design and development of new biomaterials, as well as various new product development projects. The Senior Materials Engineer will be an in-house expert on utilizing, designing, testing, and characterizing solutions utilizing Dimension Inx’s core platform technology. The Senior Materials Engineer is a technically focused scientist or engineer who can quickly design and iterate new materials and biofabrication techniques, work on multiple and varied projects simultaneously, and help lead and mentor a growing team of materials and biomedical project engineers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conceptualizes, designs, and develops new biomaterials for different clinical applications
  • Proficiently utilizes additive manufacturing technology such as 3D-printing for use with Dimension Inx’s core technology platform
  • Coordinates and creates technical process protocols and SOPs with adherence to internal quality systems and policies
  • Independently and collaboratively creates, develops, executes early-stage project plans
  • Provides technical support and materials expertise on specific tasks and projects
  • Oversees and executes various activities including but limited to:
    • Conceptual and prototype development of new biomaterials
    • Materials characterization and analysis
    • Relevant physical benchtop testing
    • Development of experimental plans
    • Creation of draft and final reports on various development activities
  • Works closely with the Chief Technology Officer and New Product Development teams to evaluate and progress new technologies through a Stage Gate product development process
  • Provides engineering and development expertise on various laboratory and project activities
  • Conducts independent research to support projects and new materials development
  • Works with and occasionally manages external third-party vendors and relationships
  • Mentors junior technical team members
  • Manages multiple R&D and new product development projects at a given time  
Position Requirements
  • PhD or MS with greater than 6+ years of experience in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related engineering field
  • Significant experience with materials science engineering principals and concepts, ideally with additional knowledge on powder-based polymer, ceramic, and composite biomaterials
  • 5+ years hands-on laboratory experience with volatile chemical handling, powder process and handling, material characterization and data analysis
  • Experimental design expertise with materials characterization techniques including but not limited to scanning electron microscopy, static and dynamic mechanical testing, rheology, thermogravimetric analyses, differential scanning calorimetry, and mass spectroscopy
  • Strong working knowledge of regenerative medicine and tissue engineering concepts
  • Experience with extrusion-based 3D-printing/additive manufacturing technologies a plus
  • Ability to work independently and within teams on several projects at a given time
  • Excellent oral and written technical communication skills
  • Experience with training and mentoring junior personnel
