MATTER announces new Restoring Brain Health Innovation Challenge with support from the Lundbeck US Charitable Fund

August 7, 2023, CHICAGO — MATTER, the premier healthcare incubator and innovation hub, with support from the Lundbeck US Charitable Fund, a corporate foundation dedicated to responsibly giving back to the community, today launched the Restoring Brain Health Innovation Challenge. The challenge is designed to spur advances in care for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias by applying data science to mine for insights from the disparate sources of data available today.

For years, data analytics has been used in healthcare to fuel faster and more accurate diagnoses, inform decision-making, personalize treatment, improve patient care and outcomes, lower costs and more.1 With recent advances in the use of big data and generative artificial intelligence, more organizations are exploring new ways to apply these modern data science tools to address persistent healthcare challenges.

One of the key challenges in advancing care for the growing population living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias is the aggregation of meaningful insights from a wide range of disparate sources of raw data, including electronic health records (EHRs), personal health records, patient portals and health-related smart phone apps, in addition to large amounts of unstructured data, strict data privacy and security regulations and a variety of data formats.1,2

Overcoming these challenges to glean useful, harmonized population insights could help improve the quality of life for the more than six million Americans, and 55 million people worldwide, who are living with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias.3,4

The 10-week, cohort-based accelerator will provide startups with mentorship, exclusive resources and an interactive curriculum to help them build their solutions and accelerate their growth. Participants will also have the opportunity to pitch their solutions to investors, health systems and others at a final showcase on January 30, 2024. Each participant will graduate from the program with actionable next steps to further advance their solutions over the subsequent six months with a free MATTER membership.
