New horizons in virtual MSK Care: Insights from Peterson Health Technology Institute

Recently, the Peterson Health Technology Institute (PHTI) released a report on virtual musculoskeletal (MSK) solutions, evaluating three categories: app-based exercise therapy, physical therapist-guided solutions and remote therapeutic monitoring-augmented physical therapy. These interventions aim to expand access to care, improve patient experience and outcomes and avoid unnecessary treatment for various MSK disorders.

Earlier this month, MATTER hosted a virtual conversation with Caroline Pearson, the executive director of the Peterson Health Technology Institute, to discuss the future of virtual MSK solutions. Pearson also elaborated on the report, explained PHTI’s methodology, shared feedback received since its publication and discussed plans to assess two additional areas: digital hypertension management and mental/behavioral health.

Read on for key insights gleaned from the conversation.

Insight One: Early access to physical therapy (PT) is proven to reduce spending and improve outcomes One in three people suffer from MSK disorders, but many do not seek PT due to barriers such as cost, access, transportation and scheduling. This lack of PT often results in unnecessary interventions, including surgery, imaging and pain medications, such as opioids.

Insight Two: Virtual MSK solutions provide significant improvements in pain relief and function compared to traditional care PHTI also found that research suggests virtual MSK solutions perform well in secondary outcomes, such as patient engagement, user experience and health equity. Additionally, PHTI noted that performance and engagement were strong for both racially diverse users and older adults.

Insight Three: App-based exercise therapy can increase accessibility and equity App-based exercise therapy solutions, when priced appropriately, can offer effective virtual care for patients with less severe conditions. These virtual solutions can help bridge access gaps, especially for older adults, rural populations and those who face challenges in accessing in-person physical therapy clinics.
